The victory that escaped for so long to the Portuguese national team was, today, finally obtained... It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears but after extra time, the Portuguese players rose to their maximum peak and beat Northern Ireland in the penalty shootouts. Ler em português
80 minutes of the match was needed in order to face the “lottery” of the penalty shootouts and for Portugal to obtain a proud victory in the European Football 7 Championship in Maia. This competition ends tomorrow.
Today was the ultimate shot for the Portuguese national team and they managed to grab this opportunity and win against Northern Ireland: 5-4 (2-2 after extra time).
With this result, Portugal achieves seventh place in the group submitting Northern Ireland to the eight place, and achieves the so longed ambition for the World Championship that takes place in 2015 in England.
In one of the most emotional matches of this championship – mostly because of maintaining a good image as host and as Portugal plays in front of their home crowd – it happened all... Ryan Walker placed Northern Ireland ahead with a goal in the first seconds of the match... A “bucket of cold water” for the Portuguese ambitions...
The Irish national team could augment the advantage at 3 minutes but the Portuguese guardian quickly gave signs that he was going to be decisive in today’s match.
The 2-0 for Northern Ireland ended up to appear at 4 minutes by David Levy.
It was too soon to throw the towel but it was also too soon for Portugal to suffer a disadvantage of two goals in which remain that way until half time.
But in the second half , nearing 22 minutes, the referee was forced to show a direct red card to Jordan Cush for a hard foul in the great goal area and in the conversion of that maximum punishment, Vítor Vilarinho made 2-1 for Portugal.
The Portuguese national team played, therefore, almost two thirds of the match with one more unit and the offensive acutilance was notorious but the prestige of the complementary time was given to the two guardians that avoided all goals until the end of the match.
Portugal attacked, with great danger, the goal of Northern Ireland but still maintained the difficulty to finish until, at 60 minutes, the moment of the match was upon us: Tiago Ramos finds a hole in the defensive “wall” of Northern Ireland and scores the 2-2 that gave opportunity to go to extra time and made the Portuguese euphoric and gave the Irish despair who already tooked for granted their victory.
In extra time, any of the teams could break the tie as opportunities existed for both teams.
